Bran Castle: the Dracula legend, its history and the drive from Gherghita
Romania's best-known castle, about 146 km from Gherghita: the real history of the fortress, its link with the Dracula legend and how to visit it in a day.

For many foreign visitors, Bran Castle is "Dracula's Castle". If you come to Romania for Dracula Land, it is hard to miss the fortress on the rock at Bran. It stands in Brasov county, about 146 kilometres from Gherghita, and can be visited on a day trip.
A short history
The story of the fortress begins in 1377, when King Louis I of Hungary gave the Saxons of Brasov the right to build a stone stronghold at the Bran pass. It was completed around 1388. Its role was practical: it guarded the trade route between Transylvania and Wallachia and served as a customs post.
For centuries Bran was a military and customs fortress, run in turn by the Hungarian crown and by the city of Brasov. In 1920, shortly after the Great Union, Brasov gave the castle to Queen Marie. She turned it into a summer residence with the help of architect Karel Liman, who had also worked at Peles.
After the queen's death the castle passed to her daughter, Princess Ileana. In 1948 it was confiscated by the communist regime and turned into a museum. In 2006 the Romanian state returned it to Archduke Dominic of Habsburg, Princess Ileana's son, and the family has kept it as a museum open to the public.
The Dracula connection
Bran's international fame comes from Bram Stoker's novel "Dracula", published in 1897. The count's castle in the book, perched on a rocky peak in the Carpathians, resembles Bran, so visitors quickly made the connection. Historians say that Vlad the Impaler, the ruler who inspired the character, never lived at Bran. The legend remains irresistible, though, and the castle tells it honestly, separating historical fact from myth.
What you can see
- Queen Marie's rooms, furnished as the royal family used them between the wars
- The inner courtyard with its well, and the secret staircase between floors
- Exhibitions on the history of the fortress, on Vlad the Impaler and on the Dracula myth
- The towers and terraces, with views over the Rucar–Bran corridor and towards the Bucegi and Piatra Craiului mountains
- The Bran Village Museum, right at the foot of the castle, with traditional houses from the area
In summer and at weekends the queue at the entrance can be long. Buy your ticket online if possible and check the opening hours on the official castle website.
How to get there from Dracula Land
The distance from Gherghita to Bran is about 146 km, around two and a half hours depending on traffic.
- take the A3 to Ploiesti, then the DN1 up the Prahova Valley, through Sinaia and Busteni
- from Predeal continue towards Rasnov and Bran, following the signs
- the car parks are in the centre of Bran village, a few minutes' walk from the castle
Traffic in the Prahova Valley is heavy at weekends, especially on the way back. If you can, choose a weekday or return later in the evening.
Combine the trip
On the way to Bran you can stop at Rasnov Citadel, 12 km away. And if you set off early, on the way back you will have time for a walk through the old centre of Brasov.
When to go and how much time to allow
Bran has visitors all year round, but the busiest periods are summer and October, around Halloween, when the castle draws visitors from all over the world. If you want peace and quiet, choose a weekday and arrive early in the morning. In winter, with snow, the castle and the village look spectacular, but the drive through the Prahova Valley needs more care.
For the castle itself allow about an hour and a half, plus the waiting time at the entrance. If you add the Bran Village Museum, a walk through the village and a traditional meal, you will need half a day. Together with the round trip from the Gherghita area, it is a full-day excursion.
One-day itinerary: Bran, Rasnov and Brasov
- 07:30 – leave Gherghita for the Prahova Valley
- 10:00 – Bran Castle, then the Bran Village Museum
- 13:00 – lunch in Bran, with local dishes
- 14:30 – Rasnov Citadel, on a hill overlooking the Barsa Land
- 16:30 – a short walk through the old centre of Brasov (optional)
- 18:00 – drive back to Gherghita
With children
Older children are usually delighted with the castle: towers, narrow stairs, hidden corridors and the story of Dracula. Inside, however, there are many steps and tight spaces, so a pushchair is hard to use. Bring a baby carrier for the little ones and keep them close in the crowded areas.
What to taste around Bran
The villages around Bran, such as Moeciu and Fundata, are known for their shepherding traditions. Try branza de burduf, a cheese traditionally matured in fir bark, balmos, a shepherd's dish of cornmeal and cheese, and smoked meats. Many guesthouses and restaurants in the area cook with produce from the nearby sheepfolds. After a morning at the castle, a traditional meal with a mountain view is the perfect end to the trip.
Where to stay
After a long day on the road, it is good to come back to quiet accommodation. See accommodation near Dracula Land, in and around Gherghita.
