Rules to know before you camp
- In national and natural parks you may only pitch a tent in designated camping areas. In the Bucegi, for example, camping is only allowed at Zanoaga.
- In the Danube Delta camping is only allowed in areas authorised by the Reserve Administration, and you need an access permit to enter the reserve.
- Fires only in designated fire places, and never in dry, windy weather.
- Take your rubbish with you. Many camping areas have been closed precisely because of the litter left behind.
- In the mountains, even in summer, nights can drop close to zero; bring a suitable sleeping bag.
- Bears are common in many mountain areas: never leave food in or next to your tent, keep it in the car or a closed place.
When to go
- June and September are the best months: pleasant weather, fewer people and lower prices.
- July and August are perfect for the seaside and the Delta, but campsites fill up fast at weekends.
- May and October are lovely in the mountains, but many campsites are only just opening or getting ready to close.
Where to stay if you don't want a tent
If you want to explore the Prahova Valley, the Bucegi Mountains and the Brasov area without sleeping in a tent, Gherghita is a convenient base, next to the A3 motorway and 40 minutes from Bucharest. Choose accommodation near Dracula Land and take day trips to the mountains, coming back in the evening to a warm bed.
