What to do in Prahova while you wait for Dracula Land to open
Until Dracula Land opens, the Gherghita area and Prahova county already offer castles, mountains, a salt mine and vineyards, all within a day trip.

Until Dracula Land opens, the Gherghita area and Prahova county already have plenty to offer anyone curious to explore the region. Prahova is one of the most visited parts of Romania, thanks to a rare combination of plain, Subcarpathian hills and the mountain resorts of the Prahova Valley. In this article we gather ideas for every taste, from quiet walks to mountain excursions.
Countryside calm around Gherghita
If you like the slow pace of village life, the area around Gherghita is good for quiet walks and time in nature, far from the bustle of the cities. The Prahova plain has long, straight roads that are good for cycling, and early in the morning and in the evening the landscape has a special light. It is the ideal way to rest between two longer excursions.
Wine and food
For lovers of food and wine, the Dealu Mare wine region, about 38 km away, is one of the best-known wine regions in Romania. Many wineries organise tastings and visits, usually by appointment, so call or write ahead. A meal with local produce, accompanied by a Prahova wine, deserves a place in any visit to the region.
Day trips
From Gherghita some of the best-known sights in the country are within easy reach. Here they are, in order of distance:
- Slanic Salt Mine, about 78 km: huge halls carved in salt, good in any weather
- Sinaia, about 98 km: the monastery, the casino and the cable car to the Bucegi
- Peles and Pelisor Castles, about 100 km: the former summer residence of Romania's kings
- Cantacuzino Castle in Busteni, about 106 km: the castle from the series "Wednesday"
- Caraiman Cross and Omu Peak, in the Bucegi, for mountain lovers
- Ialomita Cave, about 127 km, with the monastery at its entrance
- Bran Castle, about 146 km: "Dracula's Castle"
Ideas depending on the weather
- Rainy day: the Slanic Salt Mine or the interiors of Peles and Cantacuzino Castles
- Clear summer day: the cable car to Babele, the Caraiman Cross or, for the fit, Omu Peak
- Autumn day: Sinaia and the forests around the castles, in their autumn colours
- Winter day: the slopes in Sinaia and Busteni, then a warm evening at your accommodation
Tips for the road
The Prahova Valley is busy at weekends, especially on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings. Set off early in the morning and come back before 5 pm or later, after 8 pm. For mountain trips, check the weather forecast and the cable car schedule on the day you go.
A long weekend in Prahova
If you come for three days, here is a balanced combination, with a mountain day, a castle day and a quieter one:
- Friday: arrive in the Gherghita area, a walk around your accommodation and dinner
- Saturday: Sinaia and Peles and Pelisor Castles, with lunch in the resort
- Sunday: Busteni, the cable car to Babele and the Caraiman Cross, then Cantacuzino Castle
- Monday: the Slanic Salt Mine in the morning and the drive home in the afternoon, when traffic in the Prahova Valley is lighter
For families with small children, replace the mountain day with the Slanic Salt Mine and an afternoon of play outdoors. For groups of friends, add an evening tasting at a Dealu Mare winery, with organised transport.
With children in Prahova
Prahova is a good destination for families, with activities for all ages. The Slanic Salt Mine is a favourite with children on rainy days, thanks to its large spaces and underground play areas. Bran Castle and Peles Castle fascinate older children, especially if you tell them the legends and history beforehand. The Busteni cable car is almost always a memorable moment, and the Bucegi plateau offers easy walks, provided the weather is good. For little ones, plan shorter days with frequent breaks and alternate long excursions with quiet days at your accommodation.
When is the best time to come
- Spring (April – June): green landscapes, fewer crowds, good prices; there may still be snow in the mountains
- Summer (July – August): the ideal season for mountain trails and cable cars, but also the busiest period
- Autumn (September – November): forest colours, pleasant weather for walks and the grape harvest in the vineyards
- Winter (December – March): skiing in the Prahova Valley and snow-covered castles, with roads that need more care
In short: why come now
Many tourists are waiting for the park to open before visiting the area. That means that now, before the opening, Prahova is quieter, with fewer crowds around Gherghita and enough time for castles, mountains and vineyards. A stay now is also a good chance to get to know the region, so you know exactly what you want to see again when Dracula Land opens its gates.
Where to stay
All these excursions combine easily with accommodation in the Gherghita area, so you can discover the region at your own pace and be close to Dracula Land when it opens its gates.
